What would you do with $1 million?

Have you ever thought about it?

If suddenly today, $1 million was placed in your hands right at this moment…what would you do with it?

Well, back in 2010 budding NBA star Lorenzen Wright was killed by a gunshot to the head. It was obviously a tragic time for the family of this young athlete.

At that time of his death Wright had earned about $55 million in his career, he had been recently divorced just a few months before. He was paying his ex-wife $16,650/month in child support for their 6 children and $10,000/month in alimony. That’s a whopping $319,000 per year for those of you without a calculator in reach.

Once she was clear of any involvement in his death, she was awarded a $1,000,000 check from the insurance company which was meant to care for his 6 children.

In 10 months, that money is almost gone.

Maybe you’re thinking, “Surely she invested the funds in some form of income producing vehicle to multiply the power of the money received.” That’s what I was thinking.

Of course, we’re both wrong. Embarrassingly wrong.

Here’s the tally:

• $32,000 for a Cadillac Escalade

• $26,000 for a Lexus

• $69,000 on furniture

• $11,750 for a New York trip

• $339,000 for purchase and improvement to a new home

• $7,100 for a pool deposit

• $5,000 for lawn equipment

• $34,000 on legal fees

Wow. Did you just say wow? I just said wow again!!!

At the time of this writing the courts have intervened and after investigation the remaining pennies have been handed over to Lorenzen’s father. I can only hope for the benefit of these children that he has a little bit more sense and will find a way to grow that money back to something that will benefit the children it was intended to care for.
